Being compromised does not cause any penalties on its own, but serves as a trigger for some reactions such as the Attack of Opportunity.
When performing a compromising action, you are compromised for the duration of the action, though each compromising action triggers reactions only once.
If a creature becomes momentarily compromised, this is an instantaneous effect which triggers reactions only in that moment.
